Short history
AE86 series of Toyota Corolla Levin and Toyota Sprinter Trueno (offered version with pop-up healights) are small, front-engine/Real-wheel-drive models from fifth generation of Corolla (E80). They were built by Toyota from 1983 to 1987 in coupé and liftback form.
They were extensively used for racing, because the cars were light, affordable, easily modifiable and combined a five-speed manual transmission, optional limited slip differential, MacPherson strut front suspension, high revving (7800 rpm), twin-cam engine with oil cooler, near 50/50 front/rear weight balance, and importantly, a front-engine/rear-drive layout — at a time when this configuration was waning industry-wide.
Widely popular for different racing (Showroom Stock, Group A, Group N, Rally etc) the cars' inherent qualities also earned the AE86 an early and enduring international prominence in the motorsport discipline of drifting. The AE86 was featured centrally in the popular, long-running Japanese manga and anime series called Initial D (1995–2013) — as the main character's drift and tofu delivery car. It also appeared in many video games etc. In 2015, Road & Track called the AE86 "a cult icon, inextricably interwoven with the earliest days of drifting." The AE86 would go on to inspire the Toyota 86 (2012–present), a 2+2 sports car jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru.
This car
This exemplary of AE86 was born as US version and later was converted to EU version (including engine, original comes with car) and being upgraded to drift tool. So it has lots of scratches from racing, but all the mechanical parts are working well (its Toyota, so totally reliable car). Rust was completely removed 10 years ago, the new paint is not very good. The suspension uses Bilstein B6 dampers and Eibach springs, there are also polyurethane bushings and LSD differential (original TRD with 25 % lock). Car has RSL Cult 14inch wheels. Tyres are old. Brakes are fine, with steel hoses. Sporting exhaust system is custom made.
There is vast of parts included: glasses (including new front window), doors, fenders, two new fronts (another set of pop-up lights, another set of fixed ones with bumper), bonnet, doors, trunk lid etc. There is also original engine, transmission, cardan shaft, steering, another live axle, another original LSD, lots of interior parts, plastic parts, engine parts etc included.
The car is working, starting on first hit. Everything is functional, there was definitive decision to prefer function over form, so body is not so beautiful as it could be. It has Czech registration papers in deposite, also could go to historic plates. Its perfect base for project – can be put to cool state or used just for fun.
There was regular service during past ten years, like every winter. Lots of parts are new (water and oil pump, spark plugs, battery etc), oil was changed every 5000-8000 km. Some papers from proves the history in Germany (imported from USA) and in Czech republic (technical inspections etc.). Its simply most sought after version of coupé with pop-up headlight and with no rust and numbers correct.
