The XR3 was introduced in 1980 as a replacement for the Ford Escort RS2000, and it quickly became a popular choice among car enthusiasts due to its sporty styling, excellent handling, and responsive engine. Built to compete with Volkswagen's Golf GTI, the XR3i was the top-of-the-line model in the Escort lineup, and it was designed to deliver a thrilling driving experience with its high-performance engine and sport-tuned suspension. The Escort Mark III was voted European Car of the Year in 1981.
One of the defining features of the Escort XR3i was its engine. The car was powered by a 1.6-liter fuel-injected engine that produced 105 horsepower and 137 Nm of torque. This engine was paired with a five-speed manual transmission, which allowed for quick and smooth gear changes, and helped the car achieve a top speed of around 190 kmh.
In addition to its powerful engine, the Escort XR3i also boasted a range of other performance features that made it stand out from the standard Escort models. These included stiffer suspension, larger brakes, and a more responsive steering system. The XR3i also featured a unique body kit that gave the car a more aggressive look, with flared wheel arches, side skirts, and a rear spoiler.
Inside the cabin, the Escort XR3i was also well-appointed, with comfortable sports seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a range of instrumentation to help the driver keep track of the car's performance. The car also featured a sunroof, power windows, and a stereo system as standard.
Over the years, the Escort XR3i underwent a number of changes and upgrades. In 1983, the car received a facelift that included new front and rear bumpers, a redesigned grille, and revised headlights. The car also received a more powerful 1.6-liter engine that produced 115 horsepower.
Despite its many improvements and upgrades, the Escort XR3i was eventually replaced by the Ford Escort RS Cosworth in 1992. However, the car remains a popular choice among car enthusiasts and collectors, thanks to its classic styling and impressive performance capabilities.
Overall, the Ford Escort XR3i was a true icon of its time, and it remains a favorite among car enthusiasts today. Its combination of performance, style, and affordability made it a popular choice among buyers, and its legacy continues to inspire new generations of car enthusiasts around the world.
